I have been visiting the Bombali Blind School/Hostel in Sierra Leone for several years now. Through my deep connection with Sierra Leone and my recurring encounters with the children, I have decided to make a documentary film about the experience. My intention is to capture the essence of the school and its impact on the lives of the visually impaired children. By documenting their daily lives, challenges, and triumphs, I hope to raise awareness of the importance of inclusive education and the resilience of these remarkable individuals. This documentary project is a testament to my commitment to highlight the remarkable work of Bombali Blind School/Hostel and inspire others to support similar initiatives.
Outside of Makeni, the capital of one of the four provinces of Sierra Leone (Northern Province), you will find the Bombali School for the Blind, one of five schools for the blind in the country. After the civil war, during which Makeni served as a base for the rebels, the needs were extremely pressing. There was scarce food available, and an abandoned slaughterhouse served as both accommodation and classroom. However, for several years now, it has not been needed anymore, as with funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), both a primary school and a dormitory have been built. Personal sponsorships play a significant role in supporting the livelihood of approximately 70 students. Since we are particularly dedicated to the educational development of visually impaired youth, the first inclusive secondary school in Sierra Leone will be established on the same premises as part of another project co-financed by the BMZ.
